The 42-year-old actor was honored at the event for his work to better the environment.

“As head of a state bordered by the sea, I have made ocean conservation a priority. It’s a key issue because it is a crucial concern for the future of mankind,” Prince Albert told Vogue in a statement. “It is time to stop taking our ocean for granted and to start looking after its precious resources.”

“Clean air, water, and a livable climate are inalienable human rights. And solving this crisis is not a question of politics, it is a question of our own survival,” Leo added.

With over 70% of the planet’s surface and 97% of the biosphere, the ocean plays a fundamental role in climate regulation, producing 50% of the oxygen that is breathed and absorbing 25% of the carbon dioxide emitted.

Since its creation in 2006, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation has placed ocean-related issues at the heart of its work: better understanding the environmental hazards to which they are exposed, combating plastic pollution, protecting endangered species , to promote innovative and sustainable solutions to the oceans, to strengthen and develop marine protected areas.

Chaired by S.A.S. the Sovereign Prince and organized by Milutin Gatsby, Global Fundraising Chairman, the first edition of the Monte Carlo Gala for the Ocean will honor Leonardo DiCaprio for his exemplary action in favor of the preservation of our Planet.
